Prepare

Proper preparation is your foundation for reducing risk, increasing safety and confidence.  Your preparation includes the research you do, what you do to make your home, car or workplace more secure.  It includes the safety equipment you purchase and how you train with it.  Your knowledge of martial arts or your understanding of body language are all part of your preparation.  Preparation is deliberate and it is tailored to your needs and abilities.

 

To properly prepare you need to asses your level of risk.  Most rapes occur in the victim’s home by someone the victim knows.  Home invasions frequently target homes that appear soft or easy to attack.  Workplace violence can happen because of disgruntled customers or employees and some are far more likely to be robbed.  Schools are common ground for bullies.  Many tourists may as well wear a “rob me” sign around their neck and are easy targets.

 

For each environment you spend time in; work, school, shopping, travel and vacation, you should perform a risk assessment.  Then, you’ll be better able to prepare for the most likely threats.  Follow these four steps to better prepare:

 

1.  Identify the risks you will most likely face.  Do this for each environment.  They will change throughout the day and may change week to week or season to season.  They will be very different when you’re on vacation.

2.  Identify the resources available to you.  This website is a great place to start.  The resource page and reading list are also great resources.  However, you should also identify the resources you’ll have at hand on your person, in your car, and in your home and workplace.  Want to be better prepared?  Match your resources to your risk.

3.  Identify and prioritize your necessary preparations.  That might mean a trip to the store for exterior light fixtures, trimming the shrubs around your house or the need to start taking karate.  You can buy pepper spray and handguns but don’t forget to factor in practice time.

4.  Develop an education plan.  What areas do you feel weakest in?  Get busy.  Start with this website and the reading list.   If you don’t find help on this page, drop me a note and request the info.  Many people have a weak spot they don’t want to deal with.  Make it a priority.  Make it a strength.
